Mathematics Today in Ghana
Indigenous mathematics research activities in Ghana?
We have learned of an Anton Amo, who studied Philosophy (Mathematics was a part of Philosophy at that time) at the University of Wittenberg in Germany. Amo taught Mathematics in Halle, Germany.
It appears that Daniel Akyeampong and F.K.A. Allotey were the first Ghanaian Ph.D.s in the mathematical sciences. The Mathematical Physicist Allotey earned his doctorate at Princeton Univerity in 1966. He returned to Ghana and became force for integrating modern mathematics and sciences into the Ghanaian educational system. It appears that Atu M. Taylor was the third (1967) Ghanaian to earn the Ph.D. in Mathematics.
Note Allotey is also President of the continent wide Society of African Physicists and Mathematicians [SAPM].
