Russell Goward, Jr. is the son of Missouri State Representative Russell Goward (Democrat-St. Louis City). In 2001 he became the first African American to earn a Ph.D. at the University of Missouri. After his Ph. D., Dr. Goward became Assistant Professor Department of Mathematics Xavier University of Louisiana. In Janaury of 2002, decided to try a research career, and became a Visiting Assistant Professor at Purdue University. during the year 2002 he will be visitng MSRI (the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley, California) for its year in Cummtative Algebra.
