Research interests are in combinatorial optimization, operations research, graph theory, and integer programming.

He received his undergraduate degree in Mathematics from Southwest Texas State University where he was a member of the varsity football team. While in graduate school at Rice University, Illya received an AT&T Labs fellowship, which was formerly a part of the Bell Labs Cooperative Research Fellowship Program for minorities.
