Dr. Percy A. Pierre held a postdoc at the University of Michigan in 1968., a Systems Engineer for the RAND Corporation, 1968-69 and 1970-71. He was a White House Fellow for the Executive Office of the President, 1969-70. From 1971 to 1977, Dr. Percy Pierre was Dean of the School of Engineering at Howard University. From 1977-1981, he was Assistant Secretary for Research, Development, and Regulation for the U.S. Department of the Army. He was President of Prairie View A&M University (1983-89). From (1990-1995), Dr. Percy A. Pierre Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan. Since 1995 he has been a full-time Professor of Electrical Engineering at MSU and is director of the new initiative funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Sloan SPC3 Program. This is a program "for academically talented students who are members of an underrepresented ethnic minority" and interested in graduate education in the areas of electrical engineering/computer science of Signal Processing, Communications, Computers, and Controls.

In 2004, Dr. Pierre was selected as one of the 50 Most Important Blacks in Research Science.
