IN RESEARCH

As over 15% (50% more than the general population rate- see below) of all Black Ph.D.'s have published at least eleven mathematics research papers, I must honor those individuals who dedicated their careers to pushing forward the frontier of mathematics (Critieria: A strong orientation towards research in the mathematical sciences either by length of career, frequency of publication, or impact of the work. At least 5 papers published in mathematics. PhD is not a criterion.).

The distribution of the total number of papers per author (in the general public):

1 or 2 articles (57%); 3 articles (8%); 4 articles (5%); 6-10 articles (10%); 11-20 articles (7%); 21-50 articles (6%); 51-100 articles 2%; 100 articles (less than 1%). Note that in the general population more than 1,500 people published more than 100 papers, including 8 mathematicians with more than 500. Paul Erdös has the most 1,401.

The first research paper published in an acredited mathematics journal by an african american is the first of two papers by Dudley Weldon Woodard: On two dimensional analysis situs with special reference to the Jordan Curve Theorem, Fundamenta Mathematicae 13 (1929), 121-145. The first two research publications in a top journal by an african american mathematician was William W. Schieffelin Claytor's Topological Immersian of Peanian Continua in a Spherical Surface, Annals of Mathematics 35 (1934), 809-835. The first page of Claytor's second paper is here. Other samples of work by black mathematicians are here.
